Meet the Rookies: Patriots CB John Ward

As the 29th overall selection in the Season 42 draft, John Ward was a highly coveted cornerback out of Mississippi State University. When he heard his name called by the New England Patriots, he knew he was in for a special opportunity.

“I’m just so grateful for the opportunity to play for such a storied organization like the Patriots,” Ward said. “They have a great track record of developing young players and I’m just thankful to be a part of that.”

In his young career, Ward has already shown great strides of improvement on the field. He had a game-sealing interception late in a matchup against the Detroit Lions, a moment he says he’ll never forget.

“It was just an incredible feeling,” he said. “I knew we needed a big play to seal the win and I was just in the right place at the right time. It was definitely a moment I’ll never forget.”

Patriots head coach JC Burns, a hall of fame receiver himself, has been impressed with Ward’s talent and intelligence on the field.

“John is one of the smartest, most talented rookies I’ve seen on the field,” Burns said. “He’s got a great work ethic and he’s always looking to improve. If I was still playing, I wouldn’t want him lined up against me.”

Ward credits much of his success to his former coach at Mississippi State, Mike Leach, who recently passed away.

“Coach Leach was everything to me,” Ward said. “He taught me everything I know about football and how to approach the game. He changed the game forever and I’ll always be grateful for everything he did for me.”

With a strong work ethic and the guidance of his coaches, John Ward is well on his way to a successful career in the Better League.
